What Happened—and Why It Matters to You

In February 2025, NC ALE conducted a raid on Carolina Hemp Hut linked to an unrelated case. Mary and her team were never notified by the ALE about any concerns, never warned, and never given the chance to respond.

Key Facts:

  • All products were accompanied by third-party COAs (lab reports).

  • Mary enforces stricter ID policies (21+) than required.

  • The store has won "Best of the Triangle" multiple years.

  • 75% of penalties collected in such raids go directly to ALE.

  • Hemp Advocates across the State decry the misappropriation of funds and the clear targeting of vendors for ALE to seek out "deep pockets" from law-abiding hemp stores

Testimonials

Everytime I go I have received excilent service. Salespersonal is very knowledgeable in all areas.

Since moving to this area this is the only store I go to. Thanks for always helping me.

I called the contact number because I was having trouble creating an account. Not only did she help get my account made (her daughter in law helped with that one!), but she offered to help me place the order. FYI - this dispensary is closed today. Mary offered (and MEANT IT) for me to go and pick up an order today! Initially, I told her no, but I ended up taking her up on the offer instead. Not only did she help me get what I needed, but she left mid-manicure to do it!! If you love a family-run business with excellent customer service and products, this is the place to go!

Tried various hemp products but Carolina Hemp Hut's full-spectrum oils top the list. Their workshops are insightful, too, for anyone looking to learn more about hemp benefits.

FAQs

Your favorite Hemp store in the Triangle has undergone some Challenges.

Why is Mary Lopez Carter being investigated?

Mary became involved in a broader enforcement action by NC Alcohol Law Enforcement (ALE) after a separate investigation involving a former employee’s family member. Her business was included despite no initial allegation of wrongdoing on her part.

Was Carolina Hemp Hut breaking the law?

All products were purchased from licensed vendors, with third-party COAs (Certificates of Analysis) on record and available at the time of sale. CHH has always followed what are considered standard lawful practices in the hemp retail space.

Why didn’t ALE notify Mary about product concerns before the raid?

To our knowledge, there was no notification or opportunity to respond to any compliance questions before the raid occurred. Mary has a track record of fixing any issue immediately when informed, because customer safety and legal compliance are core values.

Is Carolina Hemp Hut still open?

Yes, absolutely. We remain open, serving our communities across NC, and committed to healing over harm. Your continued support keeps us strong.

Who receives the money when ALE issues fines or seizes products?

By law, 75% of the penalties collected from these types of enforcement actions go directly to ALE, with the remaining 25% going to the NC General Fund. This raises valid questions about whether financial incentives may unintentionally affect enforcement behavior.

Is Mary facing criminal charges?

Mary is working through the legal system with her team and continues to assert her innocence. She was never notified of any noncompliant material before the raid and continues to comply with all federal and state regulations to the best of her knowledge.

Has Carolina Hemp Hut ever been cited for illegal cannabis sales?

No. Prior to this event, Carolina Hemp Hut had never received any citation or warning related to unlawful product sales. Our compliance and customer-first culture has helped build a reputation we’re proud of.

Why should I care about what’s happening to CHH?

If this can happen to one of the most transparent wellness businesses in NC, it could happen to others. This case highlights the need for fair enforcement, clear communication, and stronger protections for small, compliant businesses.
